This was a good match, but with plenty of controversy over what techniques are legal. Grandmaster William C. C. Chen is seen explaining the American versus Chinese rules to Tuishou Chen. (Rick Barrett is the Official.) In the end, Tuishou's coach withdrew his man, and this excellent match ended.

Tuishou Chen wins the gold (temporarily) in this match with Daniel Caulfield, 9 to 3. Dan is a world-champion martial artist, with national and international silver and gold medals in push hands. After the Championship, Some No-Rules Push Hands Play

Free-style demo bout with Daniel Caulfield (2005-07-02, Orlando)

Daniel Caulfield and Tuishou Chen clearly wanted to keep going after competing in the International Chinese Martial Arts Championship. For fun and learning, they went on to push hands without the benefit of rules or judges. The result is both instructive and entertaining.

Free-style demo bout with Jan Lucanus (2005-07-03, Orlando)

Free-style demo bout with Daniel Caulfield (2005-07-03, Orlando)

In this next bout, Dan works hard to push Tuishou, and as he did in the competition finals, throws Tuishou over his shoulder. And once again, Tuishou manages to land perfectly, without losing his balance. (In the 2004 World Cup, Tuishou had won the gold and Dan had won the silver against him for moving-step push hands - just as happened in this 2005 championship.)

Free-style demo bout with Trevor Cohen (2005-07-03, Orlando)

Exhausted but game, Tuishou Chen goes on to push with Trevor Cohen, who won the competition's gold medal in the middleweight fixed-step category. Despite the size difference, Trevor makes hard work for Tuishou, who still throws in a few great moves.

Finally, Tuishou Chen takes on Jan Childress, the competition's winner (after Tuishou's withdrawal) in the heavyweight fixed-step, restricted-step, and moving-step categories. This clip is an amazing display by Tuishou, especially considering the intensity of the previous bouts and the proven skill of all of his opponents.

Through his father, Tuishou Chen Chi-Cheng traces his Tai Chi lineage and Yang style to the legendary Professor Cheng Man-Ching. Tuishou teaches junior high school in Taiwan and coaches youngsters in their pursuit of push hands.

"Tuishou" is a nickname (Chinese for push hands, his specialty), and there are several Western spellings to his name - including Chen Zhicheng and Tun Ze Tun. His defeat of Josh Waitzkin at the 2002 World Cup figures prominently in Josh's widely-praised book "The Art of Learning: An Inner Journey to Optimal Performance".

In the book, Josh explains how his defeat at the 2002 World Cup by Tuishou led him to develop the training methods used so successfully by the champion push hands team of Grandmaster William C. C. Chen.
